Chapter Philanthropy

Philanthropy is one of the most important aspects of being a USC Kappa. We are always asking ourselves the question, "How can we help others?" We hold many philanthropic and community service events throughout the year! Some of these events include fundraising for Reading is Fundamental, supporting our local Los Angeles community and partnering with different chapters to raise awareness for organizations across the country. The Kappa girls of Delta Tau are passionate advocates of community service. It is one of the most important aspects of our chapter and greek life at USC.

Trick or Read
Every year our chapter comes together to fundraise money for Reading is Fundamental, a charity supported by Kappa chapters across the nation. Every Halloween, we hold our annual "Trick-or-Read" fundraiser where our girls pass out donated books (and candy) to local trick-or-treaters on the row. Every member of our house contributes children's books to help support this event. Our chapter proudly promotes children's literacy through fun twist on the tradition of trick-or-treating.

Kite and Key Kar Wash
In the Spring of 2020, our chapter teamed up with the Kappa Alpha Theta chapter at USC for the very first Kite and Key Kar Wash. In our very own parking lot, girls rinsed, washed and dried the cars of friends, family and anyone driving down 28th street. For this fundraiser, we chose to support Swim With Mike. The charity began started when three-time All American USC swimmer, Mike Nyeholt, was paralyzed in a motorcycle accident. Since then Swim With Mike has grown with the mission of financially supporting the education of physically challenged athletes. We were so honored to support such a wonderful cause with a modern take on a classic greek life philanthropy event. Overall, we raised $5,290 and because of this success, we hope to hold this event annually.

Supporting Frontline Heros
While it was sad that to have had to adjust to an online school experience, as a philanthropic organization we recognize the great hardships faced by others during COVID-19. USC Kappa partnered with NYU Kappa, TCU Kappa, and many more to raise money for our frontline heroes. We took advantage of the extreme impact of digital media during this time and each of our members posted bingo boards on their Instagram stories, asking friends and family to donate money to this cause. These donations helped to provide meals for healthcare workers, police officers, fire fighters, janitors, and anyone else who is still out there working hard. Meals were delivered from small local and family-run businesses.

Fundraiser for NAACP LDF
While our in person school year ended earlier than expected this past March, we learned to come together to play our part in the nationwide movement supporting black lives. In June, we organized a fundraiser to gather donations for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, whose goal is to fight against racial injustice through litigation, advocacy, and public education. We intend to use our voices to help implement change around inequality both at USC and in our society.
